Hamnet is one of the most beautiful, and heart breaking films I’ve ever seen. It’s like a fever dream set in a magical land. And I highly recommend seeing it!
What’s it about?
It’s a type of ‘what if’ about William Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes. It’s directed by the very talented Chloé Zhao, who co-wrote the screenplay with Maggie O’Farrell, based on the 2020 novel by O’Farrell.
Hamnet covers the birth of their children, and the loss of their son. It’s a very indulgent hypothetical look at what may had inspired Shakespeare to write his masterpiece Hamlet. That said, it’s beautiful.
It stars Jessie Buckley, who has been nominated for best actor, as Agnes, and and Paul Mescal as Shakespeare.
While the events are loosely based on reality, it’s the emotional depth that resonates and pulls us into this tragedy with a grip that only the truly stupid, or heartless, will remain immune to.
While you may think that the main character is the titular bard it isn’t. It’s Agnes and her strong-willed character that is centre stage.
This fever dream of beauty gets an easy 9/10 from me.
All the series and all the movies couldn't put society back together again.
