Deep Rock Galactic is a gem (lol) of a game. Free with January’s PS Plus; my mates and I have racked up dozens of hours. In fact, one has probably spent hundreds of hours on it, right Hammer? (Your nickname seems so appropriate for this game too).
Deep Rock is sitting on a rather excellent 84% on Humble Bundle, a deserved number I think. What’s it about though? Let’s look at what Wiki has to say:
Deep Rock Galactic is a cooperative first-person shooter video game developed by Danish studio Ghost Ship Games and published by Coffee Stain Publishing. Deep Rock Galactic was fully released on May 13, 2020 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One after spending two years in early access.
Wiki
The game has 4 classes:
- Gunner (the best)
- Driller
- Scout
- Engineer
I play as the gunner, the best class. Why is he the best? I’ll tell you why!
I like killing things in games. Lots of things. And the gunner with his minigun does that, very well. You start with the ‘Lead Storm’ minigun, and can then upgrade to a high-caliber autocannon and a guided missile launcher.
Weapons
Damage | 10 Kinetic |

This simple yet deadly gun is fun. It’s perfect for taking care of little bugs and has a bloody great big clip (which you can extend). It does tend to spray more than a frat boy taking a leak after a night of action, but there are some upgrades you can make to fix that.
Then there is the Auto Cannon. Man, this thing packs a punch. It feels like walking around with an anti-aircraft flack cannon. And it’s meaty as all hell.
Damage | 14 kinetic |
Area Damage | 9 Explosive |
Magazine Size | 110 |
Max Ammo | 440 |
Reload Time | 5s |
Movement Speed While Using | 50% |
Top Rate of Fire (per second) | 5.5 |
Maximum Damage Radius | 0.75m |
Radius | 1.4m |
Minimum Damage | 50% |
Friendly Fire | 0% |
This is a nice weapon because of its area of effect. Nothing like raining down metal hell into a swarm and watching them all explode! It’s a bit slower than its predecessor and has a much smaller clip. So keep an eye on your ammo.
The there is the mighty guided missile launcher, the Hurricane!
Damage | 16 |
Area Damage | 20 Explosive |
Magazine Size | 36 |
Max Ammo | 288 |
Rate of Fire (per second) | 3 |
Reload Time | 3.5s |
Radius | 1.4m |
Maximum Damage Radius | 1m |
Minimum Damage | 50% |
The Hurricane is a big weapon that carries a punch, but it does take some getting used to.
These are the Gunners primary weapons but he also has a range of secondary guns that are very useful for when you need to reload.
The “Bulldog” Heavy Revolver is meaty and the BRT7 Burst Fire Gun can wipe out smaller enemies when you’re in a bind. They are quite important for coving you and your allies when you need to reload your primary, which can take seconds. And those seconds tend to feel like minutes when you’re having your ass munched on by bugs.
Equipment
The shield generator is a godsend when your allies are down. Once upgraded, you can hide in this impenetrable dome for up to 10 seconds while you revive someone. The are also great for clearing an area of bugs.
The zipline is one of my favourite bits of kit. It sets up a line that other allies can use, and also gives you a Birdseye of the battle field. It’s super useful to hang from this during a swarm to laydown hell from above!
It also lets you get to otherwise unreachable areas.
Armour
The Barracuda Armour Rig is a beast. Like all the other weapons and equipment, you can upgrade it. It has some serious buffs for a tank-like character and pretty decent carry capacity too.
Shield | 25 |
Recharge Delay | 5.5s |
Explosion Resistance | 0% |
Health | 110 |
Regeneration Rate | 100% |
Revive Invulnerability | 3s |
Carry Capacity | 40 |
Conclusion
The gunner is the best! Have I played with the other characters? No. Am I absolutely biased? Yes. BUT… He is a a load of fun. He’s also the one that is supposed to look after all the other characters. It’s his job to protect them, to take the damage and to dish it out. They say he is supposed to be the first to go down, and the last to get back to the pod, but being the selfish git that I am, that rarely happens.
